“As we departed the station, we accepted a couple of glasses of complimentary champagne, kicked off our shoes, and stretched out. When the champagne was gone, we played a round of gin and went for a walk. That evening we read ourselves to sleep while lying in bed after dinner – a dinner we enjoyed at a table set with a white tablecloth (I had sirloin).” So starts Tom Lichty’s description of train travel aboard an Amtrak sleeper car. Fun article. I just took the Amtrak Cascade to Seattle last weekend and enjoyed it immensely. Amtrak offers free wi-fi now – it’s a blast to ride along with your laptop and watch other people driving along in their cars…gloat gloat gloat!
Amtrak is turning 40 years old THIS WEEK – May 2011. There will be a celebration on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 10-4 at Portland’s Union Station for National Train Day….the celebrated SP 4449 Steam Engine will be there. Lots of activities and fun to be had!
